The objective of this project was to gain an understanding of the general design and construction of consumer electronic products through an analysis of internal componentry, mechanical design features, materials, and manufacturing processes. The task was to choose an existing clam shell consumer electronic and redesign the next generation of the product. This was a group project done with Tia Wiseman and we collaborated to redesign this sound machine by HoMedics.
Features of the existing product:
We conducted a tear down of the existing product to learn about its features and components.
The internal components of the sound machine:
We analyzed each injection molded housing part and their molding features and details.
Electronic elements of the sound machine:
I created a CAD model of the existing product to get a more in-depth understanding of each component and design feature of the existing product, along with its dimensions.
After completing the tear down of the existing product, the next task was to redesign the housing for a fresh new look and feel. We started by creating a mood board to capture the style and approach we wanted to pursue throughout the design process.
I generated some concept sketches and explored different forms for our redesign.
Our final design is a more modern, compact, simple and intuitive sound machine that fits into the home environment. The housing is matte ABS with TPU overmolding on both the top and bottom of the product.
We replaced the text on the original machine with icons embossed into the TPU overmold that light up when pressed. This eliminates the need to print in different languages and makes the design universal.
There is a timer button located on the front of the machine, along with 15, 30 and 60 minute timer options embossed into the TPU overmold. The machine can be powered by either a DC power cable or 4 AA batteries for a cordless alternative.
Side by side 3D printed redesign with the original product by HoMedics.
Components of the 3D printed housing:
I produced technical drawings of the final design with all components and dimensions.
